Abstract: Cobit, initially an acronym for “Control objectives for information and related technology”, is a framework created by ISACA for information technology (IT) management and IT Governance. It is a supporting toolset that allows professionals to bridge the gap between control requirements, technical issues and business risks. Its stated mission is “to research, develop, publish and promote an authoritative, up-to-date, international set of generally accepted information technology control objectives for day-to-day use by business managers, IT professionals, and IT assurance professionals.” Cobit was first released in 1996, its current version, Cobit 5, has just been published in April 2012.

Last December, the Committee of Sponsoring Organizations of the Treadway Commission (COSO) released – for public comment – a draft update to the 1992 Internal Control – Integrated Framework intended to help organizations improve performance with greater agility, confidence and clarity. The public comment period ended on March 31, 2012 and the final updated Framework is slated to be released in early 2013. The renewed Framework is expected to enable organizations to adapt to increasing complexity and pace of change; to mitigate risks to the achievement of objectives; and to provide reliable information to support sound decision making.
